I have fallen in love with the simplicity of dawn

Small birds sing in the distance and I remember a simpler time

I wake, rubbing the troubles of the night from my eyes and reach for you

I have forgotten that you no longer lay beside me, or with me at all

Crumpled sheets greet my hand and I dwell in silence. I break off the thought of missing you and look to the dawn.

There are better words to say now than, “wish me well” and “goodbye forever”

I look to the dawn and fall in love with the sweet words of bird’s song

The wind whistles through the buildings, bound for a place free and open. I envy it.

More now than ever before, I wish for simple dawns and birds that greet me.

Maybe in time I will see that a love for things gone, is not so different than loving the dawn
