Down the hall and to the left
You’ll find a beating heart
In case of ice, meant to keep it apart
From the one it wants the most
You’ll hear it, in the dead of night
When the dreams turn to nightmares
And when the crying stops
It will whisper
Of old memories
And the feel of warmth
Of surprises
And the gift to carry on
And when you hear it in the night
Do not be dismayed
For that thumping
Hidden from the wicked therein
Will keep beating
Until it knows free will
