The Guilt

The guilt sets in
It’s my fault really
I should have left
When he told me to hold my breath
And the walls became his enemy

I should have left
When he said it was nothing
And the bottle became his friend

I was guilty too
It was my fault
She died protecting me

And now I am guilty too mom
When dad quit his job
And decided the world was his enemy

We should have left
But we stayed with memories on our mind
We remembered the good times
Told ourselves to ignore the signs

But now you’re gone
And the guilt has yet to leave
